Devastating floods in Germany destroyed hundreds of buildings, bridges and railroad lines in July. At least 220 inhabitants were killed in the Ahr valley. A whole cultural landscape disappeared. Many of the people who have lived there for generations have lost their homes and often their hope. At the same time, the deadly masses of water triggered a huge wave of relief efforts.
