Half-time break. On a early Sunday morning in Potsdam, the “Welcome United” football team warms up on the pitch to take on the local team “Fortuna Babelsberg”.
This is no ordinary match. “Welcome United” was formed last year in June for avid footballers from countries as diverse and far-flung as Somalia, Cameroon, Serbia, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Macedonia, Syria and Iraq.
As first club in Germany SV Babelsberg 03 integrated a team in his club structures, which consisting exclusively of refugees. The special thing about this project is the full integration of the players into the club life. The players are members of the association and were given the same rights and obligations, as well as all the other teams of the club. This includes insurance, equipment, official training times, care, etc. In a short time, more than 60 refugees began their training at Welcome United 03 and first matches were organized. Since 2015 the refugee soccer team plays successful in the district league.
