AUSTRIA. Vienna, December 8, 2015,
Omid Sharif, from Afghanistan, works at the reception of the hotel. He speaks English and German as well as three Afghan languages. “I was 14 when I came to Austria, before the refugee crisis. My father was an Afghan government official in exile and he was already here,” he begins before breaking off to answer the telephone. “I dreamt of being a pilot, or getting an apprenticeship in IT, but I started work here instead, doing nights. It was rather boring and hard on the body. It is better now, being on the day shift. You can learn more during the day than at night and you have to keep learning if you want to get ahead. Life’s for moving forward, isn’t it?”
