GERMANY, JAENSCHWALDE, BRANDENBURG – January 30, 2014: The 250 residents of the farming village Atterwasch on Germany’s eastern border could become a victims of the country’s ambitious attempt to transform their energy sector. The Swedish energy concern Vattenfall, which provides much of eastern Germany with power, wants to raze Atterwasch, its 14th century church and surrounding homes, to mine the brown coal, or lignite lying beneath its streets to feed its German power generators.
